Unveiling the Real Face of Psychology: Beyond Preconceptions

Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Everyday Psychology

When presented with the terms Psychology or Psychologist, a certain image or perception might come to mind. This can be from the media, films, or just what you have heard from others. Perhaps alarm bells might start to ring; you may start to think of things going wrong or things that need fixing in your life, or you may think of mind-reading. Suddenly psychology seems like a daunting place we go to just when we encounter problems. What if someone told you that Psychology isn’t just all about problems but, in actual fact, Psychology is present in everything we do on a day-to-day basis, whether we are aware of it or not? Psychology applies to everyone and anyone, and I will explain why.

Understanding the Power of the Mind: The Essence of Psychology

As human beings, our minds and behaviors are two of the most powerful things that determine how things go for us. And guess what Psychology is...

The study of the mind and behavior (according to the American Psychological Association).

Would it, therefore, not be natural to want to understand our minds and behaviors better so we can maximize our potential?

Shifting Focus Inward: The Neglected Path to Personal Growth

In theory, it should be, but as humans, a lot of our time is spent looking outwardly. In life, we often spend a lot of time studying different things, yet do we spend enough time understanding our minds and our own behaviors? The two very things that can make us better.

If you don't fully understand your mind and behavior, how can you expect to be the best version of yourself?

Psychology bridges this gap, put simply, “the purpose of psychology is to give us a completely different idea of the things we know best” (Paul Valery).

Demystifying Psychology: Beyond Disorders and Dysfunction

While it’s easier to associate Psychology with mental disorders and dysfunctional behaviors, it’s important to acknowledge that this is merely one branch of psychology, which has its own area of expertise, typically lying in the clinical branch of psychology.

You don’t necessarily have to be suffering from a mental disorder to access psychological support. You just need to be interested in understanding your own behavior and thought process so you can move towards your goals and overcome any mental blocks that might be holding you back.

Navigating the Highs as well as the Lows: Psychology for Success

Despite common belief, Psychology is not just all “dark clouds” and bad days. It’s equally about how we can think differently so we can thrive going forward. We all have mental blocks or things that hold us back, and this is true for even the most successful people. Psychology is about how we take the next step, how we keep ourselves motivated, and how we move ourselves towards our goals. It involves acknowledging the good as well as the bad, understanding how our belief systems, thoughts, and behaviors can impact our success, and how we navigate life.

So long as you’re a human being, you can benefit from psychology as psychology is the study of human behavior and thinking after all.

Personalized Psychology: Your Unique Journey

Psychology is all about you, yet psychology will look different for each person depending on their existing needs and current mindset.
